- Donations By Text is Chilling
Half of the 863 donors included in the analysis by the Pew Internet Project, together with the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard, said they used their phones to make a contribution for Haiti immediately after hearing about the Text to Give campaign, and another 23 percent said they made it the same day they heard about it.
That impulse translated into an estimated $43 million that arrived via about 4.3 million texted donations to support the Haiti relief effort, and it set off a race among nonprofit groups to tap what was perceived as a potential new gold mine.
But the survey, which had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points, also showed how hard the phenomenon has been to replicate.

How much effective communication is lost when we text? Most of it.

What are the Interfaces - Get Details and Sign-Up - Sexting and the Military
It is a trend that is no longer confined to the walls of high schools and cell phone-toting teens. Sexting is creeping into the world of the United States military.
They are known as the few and the proud, but now the Marine Corps is getting a new label: sexters. According to the May 16 edition of the Marine Corps Times, there has been a sharp increase in the exchange of sexually explicit messages and photos among Marines.
It's a topic that can be especially delicate for military couples who often spend months apart during deployments.
Sexting and the Military - Technology and Its Impact on Laws
Being charged with accessing child pornography can lead to many questions for potential defendants. These are crimes that receive a lot of attention in the media, and those accused will have a long fight in front of them to clear their names. While child pornography laws have been in place for many years, the laws as written may not provide the goals that lawmakers intended. As technology changes, the law will need to adapt to be able to address all the issues that may arise.
There are both federal and state laws in place regarding child pornography. Federal laws against child pornography were created in an effort to prevent children from being exploited.
Technology and Its Impact on Laws - Sexting a New Adult Activity
In 2009, the Pew Center for Internet and American Life published survey findings that 4 percent of adolescents 12 to 17 years old had sent sexually suggestive nude or nearly nude images or videos of themselves to someone else via text message.
That sparked a sexting panic over the unsettling implications of young people engaging in this type of illicit interaction, as well as legal issues involving the cell phone-transmitted photos that could be deemed child pornography.
Consequently, much of the media attention to sexting has focused solely on adolescent behavior, yet the act of sexting is not limited to teens. - Train Updates via Text Message

- Premium Text Messaging Complaints
People are finding charges on their mobile phone bills that they say were not authorized, including mystery text services that appear out of nowhere and charge for content that people believed was free.
I was the victim of a scam recently in which $9.99 was charged to my cellular account for so-called inspiration text messages for which I definitely did not sign up. The phone, a BlackBerry on Sprint, is a second phone kept around for emergencies only and had not been used for about a month before the text messages were noticed.
I halted the service by texting STOP and called the company listed as the provider, InspiraCell, to find out why they had signed me up for this inane service. I could not get through. I next called Sprint to ask them about it. A customer support representative put a block on the service, removed text message service entirely from the phone and told me I would be able to get the charge removed from my bill when the statement came, which I was. However, he was not able to tell me how the charge got authorized for my account.

- Medication Reminders by Text
Text messaging has been blamed for all sorts of woes in recent years, from distracting drivers and walkers to causing chronic pain and promoting less personal communication. But a pediatrician now suggests that these quick messages have a bright side: They can remind us to take our medication.
Research has shown that up to half of patients may fail to take their daily medication properly, with forgetfulness being a top reason for non-adherence. So at least in some cases, sending a text message reminder may be all that a patient needs, said Robotham, who has encouraged the use of appropriate texting among doctors at her hospital.
Texting to Remind You to Take Your Medication - 2009 Reflections and 2010 Predictions
Another year has rolled by marked by miracles, political milestones and tragedies alike. 2009 was the year of financial uproar with bailouts and ponzi schemes dominating the news on a regular basis. Chrysler and GM stalwart car giants struggled to survive. Bernie Madoffs financial pyramid came tumbling down, taking average citizen's retirement plans with it, emptying the coffers of trusting non-profits and celebrities alike.
The United States democratically dominated political landscape juggled health care reform, accusations of death boards, raucous town hall meetings and tea parties from coast to coast. The Swine Flu was quickly renamed H1N1 so that the pork industry would not suffer, and the politicized name change did little to calm pandemic worries.
2009 was also marred by a number of notable deaths. Farrah Fawcett, the charming Charlies Angel, battle with cancer came to an end. The controversial but talented Michael Jackson succumbed to what appeared to be a fatal drug cocktail. Eunice Kennedy Shriver, known for the creation of the Special Olympics, passed on. Ted Kennedy, the patriarch of the Kennedy clan, and another controversial and historic figure, succumbed in his battle against a brain tumor. Walter Cronkite, the most trusted voice in America, died, bringing about the end of an era in journalism. Patrick Swayze who danced his way into our hearts, left us with nothing but sadness over his untimely death.
Some may see, the most noticeable death, as the death of capitalism. The bailouts, the governments role in the car companies, big government and what some seem to feel are steps toward socialism, have caused an unprecedented divide in the US.
2009 Reflections, 2010 Predictions - Mobile Phones in Prison A Security Concern
Mobile phones smuggled into British prisons could be used by Islamist militants to spread their extremist ideology and threaten national security, Conservatives claimed today.
Tory security spokeswoman Baroness Neville-Jones quoted official Justice Ministry figures which show that more mobile phones and SIM cards than ever are being secretly brought into jails, despite a ban on their use.

Todays society is all about being connected 24-7. Cell phones now provide instant access to anyone and everyone, from corporate executives to housewives and children alike. While cellular connectivity is a comfort to some, it can be rude and disruptive to others. You may wish to be available at all times, but there are some times when it is simply not appropriate to use your cell phone.
Also, cell phones should not be treated as status symbols, and should not be paraded out simply to impress others. Regardless of how new and impressive your cell phone may be, dragging it out in a public setting is seldom going to win you any fans.
Follow these simple cell phone guidelines to strike a balance between accessibility and consideration for others...
